THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 17 Branch no. 197 Legion news By Sharon Graham P.R.O. Comrades, L a s t S a t u r d a y, t h e Branch had a farewell party for George and Aice DeRabbie. It was very nice to see so many Legion members and our other Branches come out to give them a send off. Thank you to everyone who helped bring something for the pot luck and for setting the meal up. All of the food was so good. George was our youngest president. He has done so much for us at the Branch. George was also a Deputy-Zone Commander, and Alice has been by his side all the way. We wish you both the very best and hope that your family will stay safe. Our Remembrance Day service is Sunday, November 11 at 10 a.m. We will meet at the Hide House parking lot and marching off at 10:30 a.m., to the Cenotaph for our Remembrance Day Service. After the parade we will be gathering at the Branch in the main hall for a roast beef dinner served at 1:15 p.m. This is open to all members who have tickets. Parents, we really need your help this year to bring the children to the Cenotaph as all of the schools are closed. I know it might be a bit hard to bundle up the children. We have taken a look and the long range forecast looks nice with sun. We look forward to seeing you there. Our next entertainment is this coming Friday evening in the games room. John McKinnon will play from 7 to 11 p.m. Everyone is welcome so come out and enjoy. Our next general meeting will be held on November 12 at 8 p.m., sharp. Ladies Auxiliary Notes The November meeting was held with 29 members present. The door prize was won by Anne Horne. Zone Commander Sheila Hicks and DeputyZone Commander Linda King were in attendance, performing their yearly audit. Comrade Sheila said the LA books were in excellent shape. Please remember to meet at the Hide House Sunday November 11 at 10 a.m., to parade to the Cenotaph at 10:30. Remember, you do not have to have a uniform to parade and this is in remembrance of the Veterans who have given you your freedom. Also we need you to volunteer to help with the Remembrance Day Dinner. Come at 9 a.m., Sunday to help set up tables and help CHRISTMAS TREASURES: There were holiday treats and beautiful handcrafts for sale at Saturday's bazaar and craft sale on at St. Alban's Church where volunteers Pat Nellis (left), Lynn Robertson and Carol Puncheon helped at the annual event. ­ Ted Tyler photo in the kitchen and we will give you a job. The more ladies we have the less work for everyone. Dolores will also need servers and dish washers. District darts are being held in the main hall Saturday, November 17. Remember dart players we also need you to help as Acton is hosting this event and we should have anywhere from 64 ­ 74 dart players. This is your Auxiliary and you as a member should be helping with this function not just playing darts do not leave it up to Norma and the same people. There is help needed before and after the event. Good luck ladies, and hope you make it to Provincials being held in Kirkland Lake in April, 2013. The LA Christmas Party will be held Thursday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m., at a cost of $20 per person, payable to Susan Poulsen. You must contact and pay Susan in advance if you plan on attending (416-917-1421) or leave a message before November 24 to let her know. Also, bring a $5 bulb for the bulb exchange if you want to participate. We are also having a penny sale table so please bring unwrapped gifts, baking, etc. for the table would be greatly appreciated. Santa and his elves will also be attending. Good luck to the ladies who will be going to Georgetown to participate in the Qualifying Round for District Cribbage on Saturday, November 24. To all the LA members who are able remember this is our busy season coming up for banquets so please volunteer your services call Annamarie and Dolores if you can help. Yours in comradeship, Peggy Harris, President to Branch 197, Ladies Auxiliary Secondary teachers postpone boycotts Midnight Sunday new deadline for sanctions in Halton In a move to try to solve a standoff between Ontario High School teachers and the province, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) postponed yesterday's launch of sanctions which could include no staff meetings, no contact with students or parents outside of the school day and no Christmas concerts. Eight school boards ­ including Halton District School Board (HDSB) ­ will now be in a legal strike position at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 11. The delay on boycotts was announced by the union on Tuesday with a meeting slated for yesterday (Wednesday) in he latest skirmish by teachers want Queen's park to scrap the controversial Putting Students First Act that curtails their bargaining rights. Within the HDSB, the OSSTF represents more than 1,300 secondary teachers and 500 secondary occasional teachers, as well as 305 members of the Office Clerical and Secretarial Staff (OCTU), and approximately 100 members within the Professional Student Services Personnel in both elementary and secondary schools. For teachers, sanctions may include withdrawing supervision of students outside the classroom, not attending staff or department meetings, not meeting or communicating with parents outside the regular school day, and not covering classes for absent teachers. Occasional teachers have been directed to decline any additional teaching duties (on-call, supervision or additional assignments). Parents and students may notice the effect of sanctions outside the school day, through reduced contact with teaching staff via email or teacher websites (homework assignments, marks). While extracurricular activities for secondary schools are expected to continue at this time, OSSTF sanctions will also mean the Board will be required to restrict activities that draw teachers out of class, such as team practices, professional development, or other events that require teacher coverage. During the OSSTF sanctions, school administrators may not have the ability to supervise students who are required to report to the office. In these instances, parents may be called and asked to pick up their child(ren). "It is unfortunate our staff and students have been placed in this position. These sanctions seem inevitable in light of the provincial gove r n m e n t 's l e g i s l a t e d terms and conditions," said Board Chair Don Vrooman. "Our objective remains to work locally to reach negotiated collective agreements with our staff," he said. "The most significant pressure caused by these sanctions is the restriction in the Board's ability to provide teacher coverage and student supervision," said David Euale, Halton's Director of Education. The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is not in a legal strike position, however, the provincial union asked members to make individual choices with voluntary responsibilities. Parents may see some changes within their child's school including limited comments on report cards, rescheduled or cancelled holiday concerts and withdrawal of some teachers' voluntary role in supervising students on trips and/or sports.
