Project HOLOGRAM Since January 2012 there have been 150 incidents where Pointof-Sale (POS) terminals or machines have been compromised in Halton Region. The prior year saw 200 such incidents. Project HOLOGRAM is a community mobilization effort aimed at preventing credit card crimes. Its focus is on POS machine thefts and skimming. The Halton Regional Police Fraud Unit is encouraging merchants to have holographic stickers placed on the joints of their POS terminals, which will enable retailers to monitor their terminals daily for evidence of machine tampering/damage to the stickers. This week and next, uniform members of the Police Service, Police Cadets and Auxiliary Officers will be attending retail locations throughout Halton to strategically place tamper-proof hologram stickers on POS machines. Following the initial roll-out phase, merchants in Halton who did not receive a hologram sticker are encouraged to con- tact the Regional Fraud Unit, who will make arrangements to have one applied. Further information and tips to prevent becoming a victim of fraud can be found on our website under the `Specialized Units Fraud' tab.
