8 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2012 Electoral boundary shift could remove Halton Hills out of Wellington-Halton Hills A l l o f We l l i n g t o n County could be part of a single riding Wellington-Woolwich under a revamped proposal to alter federal electoral boundaries announced last week. In August, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission (FEBC) published a proposal for a new electoral map and now the Commission is asking for public input. The Commission's original proposal left both Perth-Wellington and Wellington-Halton Hills unchanged, but the version on the Commission's website on November 9 would remove Mapleton, Wellington North and Minto from Perth-Wellington and to add them to Wellington-Halton Hills. The current proposal would see the Township of Woolwich removed from Kitchener-Conestoga and added to the electoral district of Wellington-Halton Hills, with the result that the originally proposed electoral district of Kitchener-Conestoga would be eliminated. In Wellington-Halton Hills, originally unchanged, the Commission now proposes putting Wellington North, Mapleton, Woolwich and Minto, removing the Town of Halton Hills and calling the new riding Wellington-Woolwich. Halton Hills would join a developing area in South Milton and be called Halton Hills - Milton. The boundary changes stem from new Statistics Canada population figures used to determine the number of seats in the House of Commons allocated to each province and territory. Ontario, where the population has increased significantly since the previous census, would have 121 electoral districts, up by 15. Wellington-Halton Hills represented federally by MP Michael Chong and provincially by MPP Ted Arnott, has approximately 115,000 residents, and the proposed new Wellington-Woolwich riding would have app r o x i m a t e l y 11 0 , 0 0 0 residents. Citizens may comment on the proposed changes by emailing to ontario@ rfed-rcf.ca or by calling 1-855-747-7224.
