Every day, four Canadians are killed and 200 are injured in alcohol-related crashes. Halton police urge all motorists to drive safe year round, but focus on the issue with the annual Holiday R.I.D.E (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign. During last year's campaign from December 1-31, Halton Regional Police stopped 17,396 vehicles; administered 564 roadside breath tests and made 37 arrests for impaired driving. Impaired driving is not just related to alcohol. To help detect impairment caused by illegal and prescribed drugs, the HRPS has front-line officers specially trained as Drug Recognition Evaluators (DRE). Drivers have a new tool to help them plan ahead and be part of the solution to stop impaired driving. Halton Region, in partnership with the Halton Regional Police Service, has launched www.halton.ca/driveSAFE to provide residents with ways to help plan for a safe ride home, how to report a suspected impaired driver, ways to talk to teens about impaired driving and more. "Death and injuries on our roads due to impaired driving are devastating to our community. The impact from any one incident ripples throughout our families, neighbours and communities," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "For this reason, road safety is a top priority for Halton Regional Council. We want Halton drivers to feel safe on our roads. By partnering with the Halton Regional Police Service, we're working together to make sure this holiday season is a safe one for everyone."
