`Disgusting' vandalism at Fairview Cemetery In recent weeks, seven monuments at Acton's Fairview Cemetery have been tipped over and pieces of decorative hardware have been removed from the columbaria, the granite structures containing cremated remains. "I am disgusted by these events," said Mayor Rick Bonnette in a press release issued on Monday. "It should concern all of us when cemeteries are not treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. This total lack of respect for monuments in memory of those who have died must not be tolerated," the Mayor said. Although Town staff reported six previous vandalism incidents over the summer, increased police surveillance curtailed the vandalism until a few weeks ago. Town staff said along with the unnecessary upset to families whose monuments recklessly disturbed, when a monument is tipped over, it can be cracked or damaged, requiring costly and timeconsuming repairs. The Town continues to monitor the cemetery on a regular basis and urges residents to report any suspicious activity to Halton police or Crime Stoppers at 905-825-8477 or on-line at www.haltoncrimestoppers.com The NEW Volume 15 No. 50 News stand Price 40¢ + GST Your Hometown Newspaper Thursday, December 13, 2012 Office: 905.877.5211 Cell: 905.873.8948 Fax: 908.877.5154 Email: npaget@remax.net WHAT'S INSIDE The Maria Street Bridge re-opens See page 3 Acton's Holiday Magic and pageants See pages 8 and 9 for photos Bummed by the NHL lockout?
