THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 3 Maria Street Bridge re-opens From a one-lane bridge with a wooden walkway to a modern, yet also heritage-looking structure, the Maria Street bridge ­ reopened last Thursday afternoon ­ has come a long way since it first linked residents of The Crescent neighborhood with Acton. Built in 1956, the bridge over a railway spur line into the Beardmore Tannery had reached the end of its life and ranked "quite high" on the Town's must-do infrastructure list. Because of the original construction, the entire MARIA STREET BRIDGE CEREMONY: The official re-opening of the Maria Street Bridge last Thursday drew a small crowd of politicians, Town staff, contractors and a neighbour. On hand were, back, left: Town manager John Kwast, Councillor Jon Hurst, Town manager Kevin Chalmers, contractor Joe Frankfort and contractor Guy Esposito. The temporary road access has been returned to its original condition as requested by the owners, who allowed the traffic and pedestrian detour route on their property. The Esposito Brothers Construction Ltd. crew will finish the cleanup work before the holidays.
