20 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2012 Mayor's Corner By Rick Bonnette I would like to praise the diligent efforts of the three fundraising groups who are doing such a splendid job in our community raising funds for our hospital, library and cultural centre and the new ice pads. As Mayor, it is very heartening to see the efforts of so many citizens stepping up to the call for help to build these facilities. It's not only our tax dollars helping, but it's with our volunteer donations. A BIG thank you! ***** Acton will be welcoming the return of the GO Train Service on January 7, 2013. The last train service in Acton was over 20 years ago before the government (of the day) cut the train service. In my opinion, that service should have never been cancelled in the first place. This time around, GO will have two trains leaving Acton in the morning (6:28 a.m. and 7:46 a.m.). There will also be two trains departing Union Station in the afternoon (4:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m). The town played a key role on the return of GO by negotiating the parking along with the Hide House. I must give credit where credit is due and Metrolinx did a marvelous job on completing the new station and the landscaping compliments the area. ***** Let's hope we have another winter like last year with very little snow. If we do get a lot of snow, our staff will do their very best to ensure that the roads are maintained for our safety. We have over 900-km of roads and 125-km of sidewalks and 25 municipal parking lots to maintain. The sequence of priority for roads is as follows: Regional and local roads. Please be patient when the snow falls. ***** It looks like there may not be a N.H.L. season for a while. If you need a hockey fix, you will find plenty of good hockey to watch in our local rinks. There is a special game on January 6, 2013. The Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni will be facing off against the Halton Hills Firefighters at Mold-Masters at 1:30. All proceeds will be going to CAShh (Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills). ***** I am sure most of you BOUNTIFUL BLESSINGS: The choir of St. Alban the Martyr Anglican Church prepared for the processional hymn at Sunday's Candlelight Service in the beautiful decorated church. Ted Tyler photos have felt the pain and heavy hearts as the citizens of Newtown are trying to understand the recent tragedy. In the lobby of the Civic Centre, there is a book of condolences if anyone wishes to sign it. We will be sending it to the Mayor of Newtown, CT in the New Year. ***** I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! ***** Congratulations to: Hand Mastectomy Boutique Georgetown on their grand opening ***** Keeping it real! The Cyber-Seniors program encourages teenagers to teach their grandparents, or a senior in their community, to use the Internet. This program is now the subject of a documentary film called Cyber-Seniors, due to be released in 2013. In order to raise awareness of this important initiative we are asking teenagers to produce a one-minute video, starring a senior citizen, to be posted on the `CyberSeniors Corner' YouTube channel. This is an opportunity for seniors to learn about the power of the Internet and to share their wisdom, and sometimes humour, with the rest of the world. For teens it provides an opportunity to teach a senior about technology, and challenges them creatively. The best videos will be featured as extras in the DVD version of the documentary film.
