THURSDAY, JANUARY 03, 2013 THE NEW TANNER 5 GRAPEVINE Community Dinner Between guests and volunteers, approximately 50 people enjoyed a full turkey dinner, with "all the trimmings" at the annual Acton Christmas Dinner, held this year at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Organizers also delivered 35 to 40 meals to those unable to attend the party. Initially, because of a lack of location, plans for the annual feast were cancelled for this year, but then volunteers began to offer to help and a new location was found and the plans were revised. With just over a week to go for Christmas we were able to pull together a wonderful community dinner. We were overwhelmed by the number of donations and volunteers who really did all the work. Businesses like Superior Glove, Mac's, Sobeys and Georgetown Chevrolet made donations. St. Joseph's Patron of Canada Church donated the space. T h e C a t h o l i c Wo m e n 's League and the Knights of Columbus made donations and volunteered their time. And then, there were many of volunteers (many with their children) too many to name who helped get the word out and gave up part of their Christmas day to make sure that everyone had a Merry Christmas. With all that help we were able to provide a lovely Christmas dinner at the church, or delivered to homes for those who were unable to make it out. A special thanks to Ann Adema who has organized this dinner for many years and guided us through the steps. It is an amazing town like Acton that would give so much of themselves to help others enjoy their Christmas Day. Many thanks, Kathleen Dills and Penny McCabe Acton, ON CORRECTION: In the December 13 issue, Acton resident Jill Thurston's first name and her son, Nicholas Thurston's surname were mis-stated in photo cutline. Put it in a letter to the Editor! It's better than just chewing your cud! What's Your Beef? Donations led to happier holidays To the Editor, The Acton Christmas Hamper Committee sends sincere and heartfelt thanks to the individuals and groups in Acton and surrounding area for your generous support of this year's Christmas Hamper Program. We especially appreciate the amount of non-perishable food donated by the five local schools (Acton High, Brookville, McKenzie-Smith Bennett, Robert Little and St. Joseph). Your kindness helped us to provide hampers for 108 families, including 134 children. Christmas was much happier for these people because of your thoughtfulness. Thanks also to the many people who gave their time to collect and sort the donated food, pack the hampers on Friday and distribute them. We appreciate the help of our group of faithful volunteers. The spirit of caring and sharing is indeed alive and well here in our town. Thanks again; we wish you God's blessings now and in the year ahead. Sincerely, Rotary Club of Acton Salvation Army Acton Family Services Knights of Columbus, Acton Council 8050 St. Vincent Charities of St. Joseph, Patron of Canada Deadline is Tuesday at noon.
