Submitted photo The Acton Atom AE Tanners brought home a Gold medal after a thrilling 1-0 O/T win in the championship game. The Tanners, sponsored by Drexler Construction and Chudleigh's, opened against Hespeler. The hosts stunned the Tanners with a goal just a minute in but Acton rebounded as Evan Ashe picked up a loose puck and buried it before Michael Haggett and Mike Jankowski scored to put the game away in the second, with assists to Kevin Reppar (2) and Laek Swain. Atom AE Tanners stike gold at tournament Ashe picked up Player of the Game honours. Next, Acton came out flying against Erin-Hillsburgh and Aydin Reddeman opened the scoring sending a wicked wrister five-hole. Jaret Rosenburg and Jankowski added first period scores assisted by Jankowski, Reddeman, Riley Drexler and Owen Kennedy. Erin clawed back with a goal but the Tanners put the 6-1 win away on goals by Reppar, Haggett and Kennedy from Ashe and Rosenburg who was awarded Player of the Game. In the semi-final, Acton met the Belle River Canadiens. From the opening draw, the Tanners dominated but the stingy Canadiens goaltender held their offence at bay until Rosenburg and Drexler combined to setup Kennedy who fired it in for the lead with seconds left in the first. With three minutes left, Haggett danced out of the corner and went top shelf to widen the lead but Belle River clawed back within one a minute later. Haggett, the Player of the Game, added an empty netter and completed the natural hat trick with 0.1 seconds left on a nifty pass from Ashe. The gold medal championship had the Tanners square off again with hometown Hespeler. The goalies stole the show during regulation with Acton's Chris Harriott and Cale McWilliams matching the Hespeler tender save for save on the way to a 0-0 score after three. Then just 43 seconds into overtime, Ashe and Haggett battled for a loose puck in front with Haggett finally getting a handle on it In Acton Ladies Hockey, Active Choice won a squeaker with a 1-0 win over Tanner's Pub & Grill. Kim Nytrai scored on a one-timer mid-way in the second period from Janet Gar- Nytrai scores winner ton and Barb Redford. Kristy Hayward earned the shutout for Active Choice. In the second game, Smooth & Trendzy defeated Acton Optical 4-1. Tammy Flute paced Smooth & Trendzy with two goals and an assist. Four goals were scored in the second period after a scoreless first period. Christine Robertson scored the lone marker for Acton Optical from Dawn Civiero and Mary Joosten. Lori McIn tyre and Flute replied for Smooth & Trendzy. Trendzy added two more in the third to put and lifted it over the goalie for the victory. Swain was Player of the Game. Tenacious checking by wingers Logyn Nyitrai, Braedan Lazenby and defence men Matthew Geim, Thomas Holmes, Zach Timbers, Reppar and Swain had the Tanners give up only three goals in four games on their way to gold. the game out of reach.
