10 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 07, 2013 FROZEN SHOES: Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 enjoyed a day of snow horseshoes played wearing oven mitts recently. Submitted photo Branch no. 197 Legion news By Sharon Graham P.R.O. Well the groundhog did not see his shadow, but I do not believe that we will get six more weeks of winter. Spring starts on the 21st of March. That is soon enough. We need a bit of the cold to fight off the flu bugs. This year has been bad and so many people are getting sick. The weather sometimes changes so fast. Last week temperatures were in the late teens with rain. Last Sunday was our Legion winter shoes. This is an annual event. It is so much fun to see all members throwing their shoes with oven mitts. The snow has changed since the horseshoes started. The snow in the past years was very high and you needed your snow blowers just to remove the snow from the paths of the pits. You just could not ask for better weather yesterday for our annual winter horseshoes. The teams went from A to D and they all had a great time. Some were new this year and had never played shoes. They did well. The whole day was filled with fun and the snow started to come down just as the shoes were finished. Congratulations to everyone and the winners of the day were Glen Wilkinson and Connie Bath. Second place was Carol Levy and George Wallis, third place was Annemarie Lowin and Irene Teas. Thank you goes out to everyone who organized the day for the winter horseshoes. Our winter fun fest for the family will be com ing up on February 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be more information to follow. We just have to hope for some snow for the kids. This is always a great day filled with fun and games for all of the family. I will keep you posted on all of the events. I just want to let you know more about the Zone Winter Social. There will be prizes for the best costume and the best mask. There will be a southern dinner served as well. It all sounds like good fun for every Branch in our zone. The Ladies Auxiliary meeting this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. sharp. Our next general meeting will be held on February 11 at 8 p.m. sharp.
