The Acton Bearcats returned from the holiday break in fine form, winning a tournament in Guelph and recording a sweep of the rival Georgetown Rebels in senior girls' high school volleyball league play. After losing their preliminary-round opening match to LaSalle of Sudbury at the University of Guelph Invitational, the Bearcats reeled off several game victories to finish second in their pool and earn a semi-final date with Sudbury's College Notre Dame. Acton's seniors prevailed 25-9, 22-25, 25-7, setting up a showdown with Val Caron's Confederation High School for the championship in the nine-team tournament. Offensively, the `Cats were led by Jen Wieck, Kirsten Lowe, Kim Trumpa, Ashley Nixon and Alison Minto as they powered to wins of 25-20, 2523 over the Sudbury-area school. Missy Rowley, Jessica Brake and Lindsay Atkinson provided strong defence for the champs, while Lowe and Melissa Bigg were named to the tournament allstar team for their efforts. The Bearcats carried the momentum from that victory into Halton league action on Tuesday, improving their record to 5-0 with a 25-20, 25-16 match win over Georgetown. In Tuesday's junior league match between host Acton and Georgetown, the Rebels earned hardfought game wins of 25-23 and 25-20.
