MITCHELL, George Elwell Passed away peacefully in the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Kincardine, Ontario on Sunday, February 26th, 2006. He was born on June 2nd, 1913, the son of James and Evelyn (Webster) Mitchell of Toronto, and grew up in the city's West End and on the family farms in Huron County near Lucknow. He enlisted in the RCAF during WWII and as a navigator, flew many missions over Europe during several tours of duty with the RAF 626 Squadron. After the war, he returned to Canada to work in Guelph where he met and married Ruth C. Miller, who predeceased him in 1994. They had six children, all of whom survive: Dale (Harriet) of Durham, Doug of Georgetown, Kevan of Savannah, Ga., Ross (Denise) of Burlington, Bruce (Diane) of Burlington and Kathleen of Hamilton. Mr. Mitchell is also survived by 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Mr. Mitchell earned his CA degree from Queen's University. In 1953, he was hired by the Department of Municipal Affairs to oversee municipal finance in Northern Ontario. He was the Treasurer of the City of York and worked there until his official retirement in 1978. During his time at York, he was involved in setting up the financial structure for Metro Toronto. Recognized as an expert in municipal finance he was one of two advisors sent to the United States at the invitation of then President Jimmy Carter to consult on that topic. After his retirement, he worked for the Townships of Guelph and Onondaga as a Treasurer, while retaining a private accounting practice. In1996, he moved back to the Lucknow area to live on the land he had loved as a boy. He continued his private practice until his eyesight failed him at the approximate age of 87, but he retained his mental acuity to his death. The family would gratefully accept donations to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation in his memory, as a measure of thanks for the outstanding care he received in his last days. At George's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to the J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, 905-877-3631 or visit www.jsjonesandsonfuneralhome.com
