As I near the end of my service as Regional Chairman, I reflect back on the many initiatives that I have had the privilege to be involved with over the years.
One initiative that stands out in my mind at this time of the year is the annual flu immunization campaign.
Each year I have rolled up my sleeve to get my flu shot to protect myself against flu and to protect the ones I love. This year is no different except that I will be getting my flu shot in November instead of October.
Halton Region is advising residents that the annual flu immunization clinics will start in mid-November this year due to a delay with vaccine production that is impacting many communities across Canada.
Influenza immunization is free to all Ontario residents, six months of age and older.
Influenza is a serious disease caused by a virus that affects the lungs. It is much worse than a cold. For the very young, the elderly and those who have weakened immune systems, flu can lead to serious complications including pneumonia and even death.
Flu immunization is the best way to protect against influenza. Healthy people should get vaccinated annually to protect themselves and to avoid spreading the virus to others in the community.
Halton Region offers free influenza immunization clinics in all Halton municipalities (Burling-ton, Oakville, Milton, Georgetown and Acton.) No appointments are necessary.
Please visit our website at www.halton.ca/health for updated clinic schedule information or call us at 1-866-4HALTON (1-866-442-5866).
