Rebels capture volleyball crowns

EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer One would assume that an undefeated season would carry some clout but Georgetown's senior Rebels had to hit the road to earn their bid to reach the Ontario high school girls' volleyball championships in Waterdown next week. The 13-0 Rebels had to travel to a so-called neutral site Hamilton late Tuesday afternoon to take on Steeltown's Cardinal Newman for the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference title match and a berth in the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) AAAA tournament March 6-7. Georgetown's seniors posted their 10th Halton Secondary School Athletic Association championship in the past 12 years last Friday, overpowering a rebuilding Oakville-Trafalgar side 25-13, 25-17 at Sheridan College. Dominant in the first set by never allowing the Red Devils to put any rallies together, the Rebels fell behind 9-3 in game two before taking control of the match, reeling off seven straight points at one stage. "That's been the pattern," said coach Kyle Stewart. "We seem to come out really strong in our first game and then just flat for the second, then come back and win it. Our See REBELS, pg. 18

With three junior-aged starters in their lineup, O-T's Red Devils will likely be favoured to be this region's champion next year, but this season's junior Rebels showed Friday that their undefeated season bodes well for GDHS's volleyball future, too. Georgetown's juniors swept away Burlington's Notre Dame in two straight games to successfully defend their Halton crown. Led by co-captains Casey McFadyen and Grade 9 student Tory McCracken, the Rebels also placed third in the Sweet 16 tournament a couple of weeks ago, which featured some of the best teams in Ontario.
