Johnson Maintenance Ltd. of Milton has been awarded to the tender to construct the first phase of the Acton Community Sports Park. Council approved the contract at Monday's meeting. Johnson was the lowest bid of $583,918. The 24.6-acre Sports Park is located directly east of the Acton Arena and Community Centre. Eight-and-ahalf acres will be developed for sports, while the rest will remain as natural open space. Phase 1 consists of a soccer field with lighting and parking. The Town budgeted $600,000 for the project, including $100,000 contribution from the Acton Soccer Club. The Ministry of Transportation is requiring the Town install 70 ft. light standards rather than the usual 53-ft. height, to reduce light spillage onto Hwy. 7. The extra height will cost $24,000. Phase 2 of the Sports Park is another soccer field. Phase 2 of the Tanners Drive Park, north of the Acton Arena and the Three Musketears Skate Park, will be done at the same time- grading, sodding, irrigation, landscaping and soccer goals, benches etc. The park was included after it decided that it would be cheaper to do the two parks at the same time. Johnson will complete the work for $51,186, whereas previous tenders the same work had ranged from $73,000 to $161,000. The park was unfunded in the 2007 budget, so the money will come from the Development Charges Reserve Fund and the Capital Financing Reserve Fund. The Three Musketears Skate Park is expected to be completed this summer.
