Roadsides littered with garbage seems to be the new rite of spring and residents have an opportunity to participate in two community-wide days to clear the trash.

The seventh annual Clean Up Halton Hills Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 21 and 20-Minute Makeover is set for the day before, Friday, April 20.

Litter Free Task Force chair Councillor Jane Fogal requests that residents and organizations register with the Halton Hills public works department, 905-873-2601, ext. 2610.

"We're still looking for groups to phone in. We have quite a few already but there's still room for lots more," she said. Fogal says the registration will allow the Town to publish the locations of various cleanup efforts so individuals and families

know where they can join in. Free garbage bags and gloves will be available from the Town Works Yard, the Acton BIA office and the Chamber of Commerce office at 328 Guelph St. in Georgetown. For the first year, a rain date has been scheduled said Fogal-- it's the following Saturday, April 28.

Schools and businesses, including Town of Halton Hills employees, can participate in the 20-Minute Makeover to clean up schoolyards and commercial areas. Fogal is hoping for 100 per cent participation from the Town's 22 schools-- 17 signed up last year. Businesses and organizations wishing to participate are also asked to contact the Public Works Department to register.

In 2006, 57 groups or residents, 20 businesses, and 17 schools participated in the Clean Up days, collecting 6,000 kg of garbage, one tandem load of scrap metal, 20 car tires and three tonnes of scrap wood.
