Stewarttown scores late to claim girls' b-ball title

Holly Bigg's last-second layup for a basket gave the Stewarttown Stingers their first North Area Tier I girls' hoops title since 2003 in a 25-23 victory over the Centennial Middle School Chargers on Wednesday in Halton elementary school athletic action at Georgetown District High School. Billed as two evenly matched teams, Stewarttown led by two points at half time and built an eight-point advantage at the end of the third quarter. But Centennial, whose lone loss in league play came against undefeated Stewarttown, rallied back to tie thanks in part to top scorer Casey Lyons, who finished with 10 points. Jade Kovacevic and Maggie Darling chipped in six points apiece for the North-champion Stingers, who will meet East representatives West Oak of Oakville in one of Tuesday's Halton Tier I semifinal matchups, slated for E.C. Drury Secondary School in Milton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. W.I. Dick of Milton will be the North's entry in the Tier I boys' final four Tuesday at E.C. Drury after knocking off previously unbeaten Chris Hadfield in the regional final in Georgetown on Wednesday 29-25. In the North Halton Tier II girls' championship game Tuesday at GDHS, Acton's M.S. Bennett recorded a 42-27 triumph over the Silver Creek Stars. Kaitlyn Thompson of MSB led all scorers with 10 points, with Chelsea Briscoe dropping in nine for Silver Creek. Silver Creek's boys completed their season on the winning side of the ledger, downing Milton's Hawthorne Village 27-18 for the North Area Tier II title.
