Salmon return to Credit

The village of Terra Cotta was known decades ago as Salmonville because of the bountiful number of fish in north Halton Hills, and for the first time in more than 100 years, Atlantic salmon are a part of the Credit River habitat again. Last week local resident Harry Blackburn (left) and Town of Caledon Ward 2 Regional Councillor Allan Thompson helped Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters staff release approximately 9,000 yearling fry into the river behind the Terra Cotta Inn as part of the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Project on the Credit. The MNR, OFAH and several other conservation partners unveiled a plan last spring after 20 years of studies to bring back the Atlantics, which in the early 20th century gradually had their spawning streams in this region wiped out in by farming and development, along with overfishing.
