In a unique move approved by the board last week, the oath was added to prayer as a mandatory part of the day for Catholic students. "I believe we are the only board in the province that are asking students to read the Oath of Citizenship daily," said Trustee Paul Marai, chair of the policy committee, which presented the recommendation to the board. It is reasonable to expect that there will be a phase-in period, added Marai. As a result of revisions to the board's opening and closing exercises policy, students now also will be singing the national anthem instead of having it played in the background. "By participating in the national anthem, prayer and the Oath of Citizenship every morning, we will keep the foundation of our society and Canada front and centre," said Marai. "I hope it will raise questions and discussion in our schools so that our students can grow as citizens."
