Town seeks ambassadors to sign The Sustainability Pledge By Nelia Raposo Special to The IFP Are you willing to publicly declare all the things you do that contribute to a sustainable Halton Hills? Jennifer Spence hopes so. As the Town of Halton Hills's Sustainability Outreach Officer, she is looking for more people, companies or organizations to become a sustainability ambassador or champion by signing the Imagine Halton Hills Sustainability Partnership Agreement and Pledge. She made the pitch at a Canadian Federation of University Women meeting on Feb. 2, at the Halton Hills Public Library. "All the choices we make today will affect everything in the future. We need to make good decisions," Spence says. statement for the community to the year 2060. It reads: "In 2060, the urban and rural communities of Halton Hills balance economic prosperity with a deep commitment to the natural environment, while retaining viable local agriculture and small-town feel, and being socially equitable, culturally vibrant and strongly connected." This vision is supported by the four pillars of sustainability: Cultural Vibrancy, Economic Prosperity, Environmental Health and Social Wellbeing. Each of these pillars is equally important and each includes several focus areas, goals and indicators, a town press release says. "This is the longest vision that we have at the town. Staff must weigh what they are asking council against this vision every time. It has to hit at least three pillars or it's unlikely to be approved," she says. Work on the Integrated Community Sustainability Strategy started after the province mandated Halton Hills to increase its residential development. By 2031, Halton Hills will be home to about 94,000 residents according to town estimates. In 2011, the population was 59,000, according to Statistics Canada. "What the Town is doing now is for the long run," Spence says. There are about 30 partners listed on the town's website as sustainability partners.
