Raider fan goes back to her roots By Brady Buck Special to The IFP Bernice Emond, a longtime Glen Williams resident, is a living link to the original Georgetown Raiders, a team that would evolve from the Georgetown Papermakers to today's Jr. A version of the franchise, a team that would go on to win many intermediate A and intermediate B Championships over the past 69 years. Bernice, now in her late eighties, remembers back to a packed Memorial Arena filled with wildly cheering Georgetown Raiders' fans. She was 17 back in those days, when her late husband Earl Emond played left wing for the Raiders' intermediate A team. During the 1947-48 season, they beat out Markham for the league title and that same year they were dubbed `The Raiders' by rival fans. It was a name they formally adopted the following season. Bernice remembers the original team members as being gentlemen off the ice, but fast and fierce on it, never shying away from an opportunity to show the visiting team who was boss. She recalls being good friends with guys like Renee Martin and Del Beaumont who were, as she said, "top notch players who could always put the puck in the back of the net when they needed it most," and fondly remembers the netminder Rabbit Rhodes, a name he was given for having the quickest glove in the county. Bernice always sent Earl off with a kiss for good luck, waving goodbye through steam at the Georgetown train station when the team travelled to other cities. She has never forgotten the elation and excitement felt when the Raiders would first step onto the ice; how seemingly the whole of Georgetown would come out on Saturday night to watch their games. Bernice even has fond memories of two particular spectators who attended every game and always sat in the same two seats, which were by the penalty box so they could taunt and shout at the opposing team! These avid Raider fans were Mrs. Harrison, mother of Jack Harrison, the team's water boy, and Mrs. Kempshead, known as Kempy; for no one cheered or taunted more than those two. A lot has changed, Bernice admits, as in those days the majority of the Raiders were veterans of the Air Force and Army, but she says that the Raiders of today display many characteristics of that original team, both in their ability to score and their gentlemanly behaviour off the ice. Bernice and her fellow residents felt they were treated like royalty by the team the night she watched them play, and when asked if she would go back, she replied with "you're damn right I would." The Jaguars had rolled through the preliminary round of their Gold Division pool with two wins and a tie before taking on the Huskies. At 4-3-1, CtK was on a fourgame win streak in league play heading into one of the largest' high school tournaments in the province, which is in its 32nd year. Trailing on three different occasions against Frank Hayden, the Jags rallied to tie the score early in the final frame on goals by Nick Aquilina, Kevin Ellsworth and Adam Smith. The Georgetown Raiders had some special guests for a recent Ontario Junior Hockey League home game as a few visitors from the Bennett Health Care Centre attended. One of the residents, Bernice Emond (holding picture), brought a team photo from the 1947-48 Georgetown intermediate team that her late husband Earl played for. Along with the current Raiders in the above photo are (front, from left) Bennett Centre residents Beryl Harper, recreation aide Brady Buck, Rose Barnes, Cecilia Reid.
