THIS SPRING THE COLOURS & TRIPLE GLAZING ARE FREE! OFFER ENDS HURRY! APRIL 24TH World champion wows crowd shares Inuit culture By Alice Rice Special to The IFP Halton Hills's Inuit Outreach Spring Social Justice Series had the pleasure of welcoming Johnny Issaluk, a world champion in Arctic high kick and a medal winner yielding more than 200 career medal finishes at the Arctic Winter Games and the Inuit Winter Olympics on Saturday, April 9. It was a fundraiser-- the latest event of a Social Justice Series for the season-- held at St. Paul's Anglican Parish Hall, Norval. The evening opened with a "Tunngasugitsi" (welcome) with the lighting of a Qulliq pronounced "Kudlik" in Inuktitut, welcoming local residents to the well attended evening event. A Qulliq is an oil lamp which is crescent shaped cup of carved soapstone, filled with whale or seal blubber and Arctic cottongrass, as a wick. The traditional use of the Qulliq is for illuminating and heating tents/igloos and for cooking. Today the Qulliq is mainly lit for ceremonial and spiritual purposes. Issaluk's presentation included stories of his traditional Inuit upbringing and firsthand accounts of hunting in the remote wilderness of the north. Issaluk's presentation also included an outstanding demonstration JOHNNY ISSALUK of a series of his true precision of athleticism and skill. One of his truly aweinspiring moves is the one-foot high kick. His award winning kick in the Olympics was 2.4 metres (8 ft.) Issaluk resides in Iqaluit, Nunavut with his young family. When not involved in Arctic sports at home and abroad, he also enjoys volunteering his time coaching and training the younger generation at the local gym. He has recently authored a book titled, Games of Survival-Traditional Inuit Games for Elementary Students. Continued on page 17 COMMUNITY EASY FINANCING AVAILABLE OAC!
