Halton District School Board wants to know the thoughts of parents. From April 18 to May 13, all parents/ guardians with children in the Halton public board are invited to complete the Tell Them From Me -- Our School parent survey. They will be emailed instructions NEWS HDSB has homework for parents -- filling out an online survey and a link to the survey starting April 18. Parents will be asked about issues related to learning opportunities, communication, school culture and climate. Information gleaned from the survey will be used to help schools try to create positive school climates, to inform annual bullying intervention plans, and for parents to have a voice in creating a supportive community at their school. Students and staff are invited to complete their own Tell Them From Me survey at school. Individual responses are then grouped together for analysis. Parents can complete their survey online from wherever Internet access is available. If you do not have Internet access, you can discuss alternatives with your child's school administrator. Child behavioural expert to speak at HDSB talk An American childhood behavioural expert is the keynote speaker at an upcoming talk for parents. J. Stuart Ablon will discuss challenging behaviour in children and teens on Wednesday, April 27, 7­9 p.m., at The Burlington Performing Arts Centre, 440 Locust St. Ablon will speak about why some children and adolescents have difficulty managing their behaviour during his presentation sponsored by the Halton District School Board. Ablon is the director of Think: Kids in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as an associate clinical professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He will provide an overview of Collaborative Problem-Solving (CPS), an evidence-based approach to understanding and helping children and adolescents with behaviour challenges. Specifically, Collaborative Problem-Solving provides an alternative conceptualization to help parents with "explosive, non-compliant" children and adolescents. The CPS model aims to help adults teach children lacking cognitive skills in the areas of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance and problemsolving. The talk is free and open to the public.
