Later he used the words "surreal," "amazing" and un- believable to describe being drafted in the fi rst round of Sunday's National Hockey League entry draft in New Jer- sey. The 18-year-old Georgetown native was taken 29th overall by the Dallas Stars. "I had all kinds of emotions running through me," Dickin- son said. "I had no expectations of where I was going to get draft- ed. I thought potentially it could be the fi rst round, but in reality I thought probably the second round." There was quite a family contingent in the stands at the Prudential Centre for the big day, including his parents, brother, sister, grandparents and some uncles and aunts. "When they called my name I thought 'is this real?' I couldn't believe it. It took me a minute to process it." Dickin- son heads to Dallas on Wednesday for a rookie orientation session. In his second sea- son with the Storm, Dick- inson scored 18 goals and added 29 assists, adding 31 penalty minutes. Considered a skill play- er with excellent speed and hockey sense, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Halton Hurricanes' minor hockey grad was origi- nally a second-round pick of the Guelph Storm in the 2012 midget draft. He played in the Canadian Hockey League top prospects game and was a member of the Canadian under-18 team last summer. Dickinson, a Christ the King Secondary School graduate, becomes the fi rst Georgetown resident since Adam Bennett was taken sixth overall in 1989 by the Chicago Blackhawks to be selected in the fi rst round of the NHL Draft, which was held in New Jersey this year. -- Guelph Mercury Georgetown residents Ra- chel McGeer and Laura Maz- zuca bounced their way to the medal podium at the recent Ontario Provincial Trampo- line Championships in Mis- sissauga. With fi elds of over 20 com- petitors in each division, the individual trampoline compe- tition was hotly contested. McGeer, 13, and Mazzuca, 16, fi nished the preliminary round in the top eight and advanced to the fi nals in their respective groups. In the last round, Mazzuca earned a bronze medal, while McGeer also had a polished routine, but strong competition in the 13-14 girls' division bumped her to sixth. On day two, McGeer and Mazzuca competed together in the synchronized pairs' event for just the third time, and only one routine would be scored, meaning there would be no chance to improve from a bad round. Both girls rose to the chal- lenge and were nearly fl aw- less, earning the highest mark of the day in the synchronized element, fi nishing second overall. Their coach, national team member Greg Roe, was par- ticularly pleased with the re- sult. "I was extremely impressed with the girls' performance," he said. "It really shows their hard work ethic when, after such a short period training, they are able to stand on the podium with their heads high." Shepley led by two shots over Californian Lisa Ferrero and was up three on Canadian stars Alena Sharp and Jennifer Kirby head- ing into today's (Thursday's) fi nal round. Former local resident and Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Mary Ann Hayward (pictured at right) fi nished up round one on her home course at two over par. Georgetown South's Samantha Spencer, 17, also a North Halton member, fi nished up at +3 to sit in a tie for ninth in the amateur division.
