THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2018 7THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 20186 Legion news By: David Maloney P.R.O. ~ Branch 197 Looking Back By: Scott Brooks The "old" Free Press Office was a prominent fixture on Mill Street for many years. Built in 1904, by H.P. Moore, this is where residents would receive the latest on news and affairs. The Free Press also offered custom printing solutions. The Dills later acquired the Free Press and, in 1978, the building was razed and a replica was built. The facade was restored and is featured on the building. The building is home to a number of businesses. This colourful photo shows the Free Press as it was in 1952. There was quite a crowd participating in the Ham Roll last Saturday, boost- ed mainly by the Bunn family. Our Grande Dame, Phyllis Bunn, was joined by 15 members of her family who had a great time along with everybody who joined us in the fun and games. The Turkey Raffle was won by Gloria Barker. Gloria was one of 13 volunteers who helped to make the day a success. Thank you to all 13 vol- unteers. Your work was greatly appreciated. On Sunday, we wel- comed five new members into the Branch: Ordinary Members, Bonnie Roach and Helen Small; Associ- ate Member, Alan Savage; along with Affiliate Mem- bers, Jerry Szyc and Amanda Plimmer were made to feel welcome by a large crowd who were there for the follow up ceremony. Following the initiation ceremony, we held our an- nual Honours and Awards meeting. It was nice to see so many members and friends in attend- ance. There was another family reunion as Marg Dunn collected her 25 Year Pin alongside three of her daughters, Teresa, Bev and Angie. Many members were present to receive pins for 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years. John McNabb, who was a 45 Year Pin recipient, recalled how he joined at the old Legion building when he was just a teenager. 87-year-old Dobbie Frizzell was there to receive his 50 Year Pin and brought along the certificate we pre- sented to him back 2011 when he shared his 80th birthday with the Acton Legion. After the cere- monies were completed, everybody enjoyed some delicious refreshments made by the Ladies Aux- iliary. Thank you, Celine, and your team of ladies who got lots of compli- ments for the fine food that you provided. Spring is on the cusp, so Ryan thinks it is time to get out the barbecue and he plans to do just that on Friday, March 23. Barbe- cued burgers and sausages will be available Friday evening between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will be entertainment in the games room starting at 6:30 pm with our very own Scott Craig. Come on down and enjoy some good food and good music. Check the notices be- hind the bar for upcoming events. By: Harry Rudolfs Some Acton streets will be repaved this summer. Although the contracts have yet to be formerly awarded, School Lane, Nelson Court and Jeffery Ave. will get new asphalt surfaces beginning in May at a cost of about $300,000. Some minor remedial work by the Region remains to be completed in the Nelson Court and Jef- frey Ave. area on 18 wastewater laterals, but is expected to have minimal effect on property owners. A bigger project is being undertaken in Limehouse, which will see full reconstruc- tion of a section of 22 Side road. The work will include curbs and storm sewer, and a multi-use path on the north side from Fifth Line to Wolseley Street at a price tag of approximately $1,000,000. According to Alexandra Fuller, manager for corporate relations for the Town: "A sidewalk will be added on the south side from Fifth Line to Toltan Park. Resurfacing and reconfig- uration of the Limehouse Public school parking lot will also be completed, as well as the addition of a community parking lot on the Toltan Park site." Resurfacing and road construction projects set to begin in May New Branch members - 40 Year Pin Awardees - 50 Year Pin Awardees
