THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, APRIL 05, 2018 9THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 05, 20188 Looking Back By: Scott Brooks Legion news By: David Maloney P.R.O. ~ Branch 197 With the arrival of spring, we have some important dates com- ing up. Joan and I will be attending the District Convention this week- end along with Peggy and Pat. The convention takes place in Simcoe. We will report back at the next General Meeting, which is Monday, April 9 at 8 p.m. April 13 the ladies will be holding their Paint and Cocktails Night and the following day there will be a very important 100th Birthday Party in the Main Hall. Frank is busy finalis- ing details for the Grand Raffle of Celebrity signed Hockey Shirts and Sticks which will take place on Saturday, April 21. There will be some very import- ant guests in attendance on that day. The date has been set for this year's Candle Light walk, which will take place on Thursday, May 3, and the Committee is busy preparing for that evening. May 7 is the date set for this year's Annual Gen- eral Meeting, at which time you will have the op- portunity to elect a new Executive. The Board will go up this week, enabling nominations to be posted. If interested in being a part of the decision mak- ing, please put your name forth. Volunteers are needed to take up positions as the current Executive have lost two members this year, and they were al- ready understaffed. Now they are simply overtaxed. Reminder to members, if you have any concerns, the proper forum is to at- tend general meetings. Check the notices be- hind the bar for upcoming events. Hockey has always and continues to be a sport of interest in Acton. Pictured, in this photo from April 1951, is the winning Town League team's manager, Ray Mason, accepting the cup on behalf of his boys from Mayor Ted Tyler. All the players in the league were guests of honour at a turkey banquet held by the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Legion in the Legion Hall. WO R D ON THE STREET With Alex Hilson Mark Hutchison: "If it was a historical building, it should've been registered. It's a little disrespectful if you ask me." Susan Seads: "I really don't know much about it. It's nice that the property will be used for housing." Brian Blackwood: "I read about it in the paper. It's hard to stop development. People have to realize development is what's going to make Acton grow." Irene Hutchison: "Didn't even know there was a proposal being put in. If it was an old building, I would hate to see it ripped down. We destroy too many of our old buildings."
