THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2018 7THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 20186 President Graham along with First Vice Dave, Pat and Joan attended the Dis- trict Convention in Simcoe last weekend. A summar- ized report was presented at our general meeting last Monday evening. Dona- tions totalling $219,000 were given to various pro- grams run by district by the Branches. The breakdown is as follows; Homeless Veterans $38,500; Bur- saries $40,000; Track and Field $3,750; Poppy $35,300; District Hospital Fund $52,300; Charitable Foundation $49,700. These donations are gladly ac- cepted and help veterans and students in many ways. A reminder to all members: if you have a student attending college or university, command of- fers $750 bursaries to those who qualify. You can get an application online at legion. ca or from the branch of LA if you are a member. Part of the form is to be filled out at the Legion. One of the guest speakers at last weekend's Conven- tion was Gary Pond, Vice President Ontario Com- mand who is responsible for membership. As Mem- bership Chairman of Br 197, his speech was of in- teresting to me and I was not disappointed. Pond faced a barrage of com- plaints regarding the new Dominion Command On- line Membership system that has one or two glitches. Pond responded positively by stating that Dominion Command had good people who recognized where the problems were and that fixes were being applied as we speak. He also had to allay fears surrounding the change that was recently made to Life Membership, that seemed to satisfy dele- gates. However, restoring years to former Fraternal members still has its issues. There were representa- tives from around 55 Legions in attendance from around the Golden Horseshoe. Between them they donated more than $219,000. This is where we see what the Legion is doing across this country. On Saturday April 21, we are going to be welcom- ing some special guests. Nancy Bower and Dick Duff will be in attendance along with some other for- mer NHL Hockey players: Peter and Brian Conacher, Dean Prentice, Rod Sieling and others yet to be named. We have sent invitations to local hockey alumni, pol- iticians, and other Legions in our Zone who have helped us raise funds for the "Leave ehe Streets Behind" campaign. This is the day that the two Autographed Hockey shirts and sticks will be drawn, along with other hockey paraphernalia to be auctioned. At Mondays Gener- al Meeting, we awarded David Wrathal with his 50 Year Pin. Acton Precast Rep received a Certifi- cate of Appreciation, and Peggy Graham along with Dave Maloney displayed the award presented at last week's convention earned by Teresa Uiterwyk as Provincial Ladies Horsehoe Champion. The Men's Crib League annual year end dinner will take place tonight, and I understand that they plan to honour one of their spe- cial members? More on this next week. We are getting closer to our Annual General Meet- ing on May 7. Nominations are now being accepted for executive positions. Please consider having your name put forward. Volunteers are needed to take up positions as the current Executive have lost two members this year and they were already understaffed. It is important to have a strong Executive so that we can provide more events that will help is bring in rev- enue. New blood is always welcome.
