ROADS 2018 program announced By: Alex Hilson Dorothy Rognvald- son celebrated her 100th birthday at a party held in her honour for at the Ac- ton Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion this past Saturday. Despite coincid- ing with one of the worst spring ice storms of recent years, the event had over 100 attendees. Well wish- ers came from both coasts, with visitors from British Columbia to Nova Scotia and everywhere in between. The event was organized by Rognvaldson's daugh- ters, Nancy Coquard, now of Quebec City, and Janet Taylor, of Port Rowan, off of Lake Erie. "It's overwhelming for one thing," said Rognv- aldson, "but I was born on a farm in Oshawa. So, I think because we had such healthy living and such great family, that's why I've lived so long." "She's just like a mother to all of us. A mother to the town," said Karen Mac- Donald, now of Halifax, Nova Scotia. "She's been there for everyone." Letters congratulating Rognvaldson came from Wellington Halton Hills MP Michael Chong; MPP Ted Arnott; Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette; Premier Kathleen Wynne; Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dow- deswell; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; Governor General Julie Payette; and Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II. "I have a lot of pleas- ant memories of her," said Lloyd Broostad of Acton. "We used to have a lot of fun." The Red Hat Ladies, a group that Rognvaldson is part of, came to support her. Members of Halton Hills Council and Mayor Rick Bonnette were also on hand to share their best wishes. Halton Hills Regional Councillor Clark Somerville said, "Dorothy drove into her 90's doing 'Meals on Wheels'. Every- where you looked, there was Dorothy. I hope to be here for when she cele- brates 120." Interestingly, Rognv- aldson was not the oldest person in the room. Rela- tive Laura Guay from Trenton was 101. Mayor Bonnette pre- sented Rognvaldson with the Key to the Town of Halton Hills, one of only five other individuals to be given the award since he began his tenure in 2003.
