Citing last year's softwood lumber tariffs that have caused business and economic insecurity, and the re- cent punitive tariffs on aluminum and steel, the motion supported con- tinuing to work with the government of Canada to support "free and fair trade and vehemently oppose restrictive trade practices." It goes on to encourage residents to be proactive by be- coming informed about the origin of consumer goods and services, and to boycott American-- w h e r e p o s s i b l e -- t o protect Canadian inter- ests. The resolution will be forwarded to all lev- els of government. Mayor Bonnette fol- lowed up wi th some po in t s abou t Ha l ton Hills being a prime lo- cation for investment, w i th c lo se t o 1 ,400 businesses, and 21,000 employees cal l ing i t home, and that it relies on a strong free-trading relat ionship with the U.S. Coming on the heels of las t year 's "Most Patriotic Town in Can- ada" f l ag cha l l en ge he felt "(Halton Hills) should take a stand with ou r f ede r a l gove r n - ment, our newly elected Premier and our muni- cipalities who are going to be negatively affected by a negative trade war." Both Mayor Bonnette and many on council recalled the town's re- sponse to the U.S. 's 2009 "Buy American" imperative that rolled out south of the border dur ing the economic downturn , caus ing a loss of 40,000 manufac- turing jobs in Ontario. This provoked a vocif- erous response from the Mayor and council then, garnering Bonnette na- tional attention as a real fighter, but in character- istic humour he quipped, "We need to show Can- adian backbone, not just back bacon." Under the current situ- ation, he reiterated that "no one wants or is en- couraging a trade war... th i s i s no t a game." Continued threats have now spread to the auto indus t ry, and he ac- knowledged that since d r a f t i ng t he mo t ion last week with coun- cillor Somerville, the pace of new was a lot to keep up with as the Quebec summit on the weekend saw lots of incendia ry l anguage directed at Prime Min- ister Trudeau by Trump and his team. Bonnette also emphasized now is not the time for parti- san politics, given how concerned local manu- facturers are: their need for support from all lev- els stems from a worry about retaliation on an individual basis. Mayor Bonnette produced his hockey puck from 2009 emblazoned with the words "fair trade goes both ways." Council- lor Somerville pointed out that while the U.S. is our best trading part- ner, they were also our worst for always hav- ing to get the best deal. Support for the motion was unanimous, with all standing in support. Minor tweaks and some tightening of language to the letter notwithstand- ing, the intent was clear. With history repeating i t s e l f , M a y o r B o n - nette was a guest on TalkRadio 1010 Evan S o l o m o n 's Tu e s d a y afternoon show themed around a potential trade war. Solomon charac- terized the resolution as "retaliation" and a "buy Canadian" motion, but Mayor Bonne t te ex- plained it was less about that and more "not buy- ing American"--you can get pickles from India. He went on to say the town hopes common sense will prevail, but if Trump continues to bully they have to push back. "We've been to the post in 2009 when America brought in... 'Buy American'...that affected industries right here in our little town. We brought a similar reso lu t ion tha t went right across Canada and the Federation of Can- adian Municipal i t ies supported it. I'm hoping this is a bit of a spark that may light the grass fire. We have such an in- tegrated economy. The whole thing is so ridicu- lous. Protectionism isn't the way to go." Mayor Bonnette: "If Trump continues to bully, we'll push back" Town passes resolution on U.S. Tariffs: "Déjà vu all over again"
