The Town has contracted the Heritage Resource Centre of the University of Waterloo to review inventories of properties with potential heritage value assembled by the Town's Heritage Committee (Heritage Halton Hills) and to recommend properties for inclusion on the Heritage Register. The Heritage Register, as specified in the Ontario Heritage Act, is intended to assist municipalities in identifying their heritage resources, and includes properties which have been designated (under the Ontario Heritage Act) and a list of non- designated properties which have cultural heritage value or interest. The listing of properties on the Heritage Register is not the same as designation under the Ontario Heritage Act, in which a permit would be required for alterations to the heritage features of the property. The listing of non-designated properties on the Heritage Register is an important heritage conservation tool, which allows the Town the ability to delay demolition while all options are considered, ranging from proceeding to designation to removing the property from the Register. There are presently over 360 properties which have been listed on the Town's Heritage Register. Owners of properties being considered for inclusion of the Heritage Register as part of Phase 3 of the process will be contacted in writing and will be invited to a Public Information Centre (PIC) or open house to be scheduled in the Fall of 2013. Additional information on the Heritage Register is available on the Town's webpage at: http://www.haltonhills.ca/heritage/index.php or by contacting Curtis Marshall, Planner - Policy at (905) 873-2601 ext. 2253, email: curtism@ haltonhills.ca or Steve Burke, Manager of Planning Policy at (905) 873-2601 ext. 2254, email: stevebu@haltonhills.ca. 78 ___________________________________________ EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT TECHNOLOGIST Salary Range: $62,346 to $74,222 per annum The Town of Halton Hills is looking for an Engineering Development Technologist for a 24 month contract with the Infrastructure Services department. That was among the findings of a report prepared by the Halton Region Health Department, which examines cancer and the trends in specific cancer rates from 1986 to 2009. It also draws on data col- lected from 2005 to 2009 by Cancer Care Ontario - a provincial government agency responsible for improving cancer services - about the incidence and mortality rates of 17 different cancers. The summarized version of the report, which was shared at regional council's health and social services committee last week, revealed the four leading types of cancer in both Halton and Ontario were lung, colorectal, prostate (men) and breast (women). "These four cancers combined account for over 50 per cent of all new cancer cases and almost 50 per cent of cancer deaths," the report stated. The report also found that when ex- amining all cancers, melanoma, thyroid, breast (women), and prostate (men) can- cers had particularly higher incidence rates for Halton than Ontario. Mortality rates for all cancers com- bined, however, was significantly lower for Halton than Ontario. Both locally and provincially, while in- cidents of many cancers have declined, non-hodgkin lymphoma, kidney, mela- noma, thyroid and prostate cancers in particular have increased, the report con- tinues. "These increases may be results of ear- lier diagnosis due to better detection and screening methods," the report stated. The full report can be found by visiting the Region's website at www.halton.ca.
