Swimmers continue trek across lake Marathon swimmer Colleen Shields of Georgetown and her teammates have had to contend with strong winds and waves as they make their way across Lake Ontario from Kingston to Burlington. The 305-km never before attempted marathon swim relay was expected to take about five days, ending at Burlington's Spencer Smith Park on Saturday. Howev- er in an online chat with the Toronto Star Wednesday afternoon one of the swim- mers, Samantha Whiteside, 23, of New Hamburg, said it may take them longer to get to Burlington. "Depending on how things go over the next day we are more realistically landing on Sunday," said Whiteside. The women-- Shields, 61, 47-year-old Nicole Mallette of Hamilton, Whiteside, Rebekah Boscariol, 18 of Markham, and another 18-year-old, Mona Sharari, of Richmond Hill-- dove into the lake about 10 a.m. Tuesday and by about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday had passed Prince Edward Point. To track the team's progress visit http:// www.becausegirlscan.ca/ and click on the Swim Tracker. Wednesday Shields told the Toronto Star she got out of the water 10 minutes ago and they were about halfway to Cobourg. "The winds and Mother Nature haven't been kind to us," said Shields. She said some people had been experiencing sea- sickness. Whiteside said the water temperature was about 20.5C and waves were about a foot high. "The wind is really doing damage to the crew though. No one can get/stay warm and it's become a real challenge not just for the swimmers, but for our volunteer crew. This wouldn't be possible without them and we really appreciate everything they're going through for us right now," said Whiteside. Last night the team had to put the relay on hold briefly due to a storm. The women have dubbed the relay "Because Girls Can" and hope to raise $300,000-- for the Because I am a Girl project, a global gender equality, anti-pov- erty and girls' rights initiative.
