Acton's Riley Spear was 14th and Callum Biehn of Georgetown 15th. Georgetown's Anita Bergsma started up her Chance to Play organization two years ago to provide an opportunity for kids in developing countries to play soccer and she's asking lo- cal residents to kick in for the campaign again this weekend. In conjunction with the Georgetown Soccer Club, Chance to Play will be col- lecting "gently used" jerseys, shorts, socks, shoes balls and coaching material all day Sat- urday at the GSC's Closing Day at the Trafalgar Sports Park. At Closing Day in 2011, Chance to Play was thrilled to receive approximately $21,000 worth of gear from the public that went to children in Tan- zania and the Philippines, al- though it took Bergsma and several volunteers many hours to sort and pack up the dona- tions. But after seeing photos of children in Tanzania taken by a friend sporting Georgetown Soccer Club uniforms while playing a game at school, Bergsma was overjoyed and vowed to keep up her efforts. Last year, about $15,000 of clothing and equipment was collected on a cold and rainy Closing Day, some of which went to youths in the Domini- can Republic, with this year's collection destined for a native reserve in Manitoba. A toonie collection will also be held on Closing Day in order to help cover the cost of trans- porting the gear in shipping containers. For more info, call Bergs- ma at 416-270-9127, e-mail anita.n.bergsma@gmail.com or visit the website www.chan- cetoplay.ca Youths in the Dominican Republic were the ben- eficiaries of soccer at- tire and equipment from the Georgetown-based Chance to Play charitable organization.
