"He worked hard to make a difference in the lives of the young hockey players who loved the game as he did. He would have been proud to see that we as a community have attained a goal of which so many worked so hard to make happen, our new arenas." A Celebrate Hal's Life will be held at an open house on Sat- urday, Sept. 7, 1-4 p.m at Mold- Masters SportsPlex, (upstairs), 221 Guelph St., Georgetown. Nurse, 26, joined teammates Sarah Black of Ottawa, Victoria, B.C.'s Chris- tine Roper and Thorold's Natalie Mas- tracci in the Canadian boat that fin- ished runner-up to the U.S. in a time of six minutes 47.62 seconds, about three-and-a-half seconds behind the winners. Those four Canuck rowers were also members of the women's eights team in red and white that placed third in Sunday's final, with the U.S. again exercising their dominance in that event with gold medals, crossing the finish line of the 2-km race in a time of 6:02.14. Romania was second in 6:07.04 and 2012 Olympics silver medalist Canada third in 6:09.74. "It's the first time I've doubled up at the worlds, so to be on the podium twice is pretty special," said Nurse, who graduated from the University of Ottawa's law school in the spring. "For me, it was nice to have that extra event to keep us sharp and once you're on the podium you want to be back there." Campbell Parker of Georgetown was the lone representative from the Halton Hills Mi- nor Lacrosse Association to make the Team Ontario under-16 ros- ter that competed in last weekend's Cana- dian Championship Field Lacrosse held in Longeuil, Que. The 16-year-old at- tackman was one of Ontario's leading scor- ers in the eight-team tournament (indi- vidual statistics were unavailable) but his squad was unable to prevent two-time de- fending champion B.C. from winning the Alumni Cup again. Ontario lost to B.C. 11-7 in the tourney opener before beat- ing Alberta 22-1 and Iroquois 21-5 to set up a rematch with B.C., won by the latter 14-9. Parker, who is a cousin of longtime National Lacrosse Leagu- ers Peter & Daryl Veltmanof Georgetown, be- gins Grade 11 studies at The Hill Academy in Vaughan this week. Local residents Nic Basilio and Ste- ven Abrams collected gold medals at the OVA Beach Volleyball Champion- ships in the boys under-13 division last month at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto, going undefeated along the way. Basilio, 11, and Abrams, 12, Grade 7 students at Stewarttown and Centenni- al Middle Schools, respectively, played a year above their age group at the beach provincials and went on a run of 12 sets in a row to win all six matches and claim the gold medals. This was the first year for the duo as beach volleyball partners and they were also teammates on the George- town Impact under-14 team last sea- son. Open house set for Sept. 7 Nic Basilio (left) and Steven Abrams made quite a first impression in their first season together as part- ners on the Ontario Volleyball As- sociation beach circuit, earning gold medals in the under-13 boys' division without losing a set dur- ing the tournament, held at Ash- bridges Bay in Toronto.
