Adult and youth choirs from across Canada, the US and be- yond congregated in this beau- tiful city to partake in a week of music making, learning and sharing, culminating with a mass choral concert on the last full day of the festival at Mile One Stadium in downtown St. John's. This mass choir concert featured Canadian tenor, David Pomeroy, Whitloof Bay from Belgium, and an east coast duo, Size 2 Shoes, along with performances by the partici- pating choristers, 700 trained voices strong! Gaudeamus choral direc- tor, Diane Murray-Charrett, accompanist Carl Steinhauser and the senior choir, ranging in age from 12-18, performed in various chamber concerts and attended mass choral rehears- als to prepare for the final con- cert. They also attended work- shops to further develop their impressive repertoire. One such workshop was with renowned Canadian cho- ral composer, Stephen Hatfield who was in attendance when the Gaudeamus Youth Choir sang two of his pieces, "All for Me Grog" and "Bonny Wood Green". Hatfield was clearly impressed if his shouts of ap- proval from the church bal- cony were any indication. He praised Murray-Charrett and her choir for the quality of their musicianship, the beauty of their sound and the complexity of their repertoire, proclaiming to them at a private workshop, ".....your songs were meat for me to chew on instead of too much syrup on my pancakes. I like that!" He also made it known that he has future plans to work directly with the Gaud- eamus Choir which is very ex- citing for these talented young singers and their director. The Gaudeamus Choir also had the thrill of performing on CBC Radio One/ Radio Noon (Newfoundland & Labrador) with host Ramona Dearing. They shared the broadcast with The Minnetonka Cham- ber Choir from Minnetonka, Minnesota and their conduc- tor, Dr. Roger Hoel. These two talented choirs shared a live ra- dio broadcast on the CBC and a bus ride back to the hotel one steamy Saturday afternoon when the Gaudeamus shuttle bus broke down and left the Georgetown singers stranded on the side of the road in very unusual 30 degree heat (for St. John's). The Minnetonka sing- ers offered them a lift back and friendships with this excep- tional choir were formed. Gaudeamus is now accept- ing new singers for their 2013- 14 season. Music Makers: ages 6-9, Intermediate Choir, ages 9-12, and Senior Youth Choir, ages 12-17. All children who love to sing are welcome to experience excellent music learning in a small group environment. No experience necessary, and no singer is turned away.
