The 2-1-1 Raiders began the cam- paign with a couple of wins on the opening weekend of the Ontario Junior Hockey League's regular schedule but were tripped up by the guest Newmar- ket Hurricanes Saturday in a 6-4 loss. Georgetown starter Michael Stiliadis was yanked early in the second period after giving up five goals on 13 shots for just his first loss in 19 games as a Raider, dating back to his rookie year in 2010- 11. The hosts outshot the 4-1-0 Hurri- canes 20-10 in the final frame and 44-33 overall but couldn't make up for their poor start. Captain Steve Hladin, Ac- ton's Michael Courvoisier, Adam Nanji and Liam Clare tallied for the Raiders. On Sunday afternoon in Milton, a first-period marker from Liam Board was all the Raiders could generate in a 2-1 overtime loss to the first-place Ice- Hawks, who were outshot 47-31. The Hamilton Red Wings visited Georgetown Wednesday night and the Raiders will be in Wellington Friday eve- ning to take on the Dukes before hosting the Pickering Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs had their paw prints all over Monday night's National Lacrosse League Draft at the To- ronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville as local native Cameron Flint was selected fourth overall by the Minnesota Swarm and Milton's Ethan O'Connor went to the host Rock with the last pick of the first round (9th overall). Flint, who turns 23 on Oct. 10, was captain and an All-America selection in his final year with Denver University's field team this past spring. He just started a job in Den- ver last month as an industrial researcher with world-wide commercial real estate devel- oper CBRE and was unable to attend Monday's draft, but can't wait to join an up-and-coming Minnesota squad that has now had four first-round picks in the last two NLL Drafts. The Swarm picked first and second overall Monday and then dealt its fifth se- lection and a veteran defenceman to the Edmonton Rush for the versatile Flint, whose parents, Donna and Ron, attended the draft to collect his new bright-yellow Swarm jersey. "It really surprised me that Minnesota traded up to pick me because I thought I was going to Edmonton," said the 5-foot- 11, 190-pound Flint, who had 37 goals for DU's Pioneers this season as they ad- vanced to the NCAA Final Four in Phila- delphia, only to drop a heartbreaker 9-8 to Syracuse in the semifinals. "It's an honour to be drafted into the NLL and something I always dreamed of. I couldn't be more confident about going to Minnesota and the team they're putting together. The last couple of years, they've cleaned up at the draft and their core group of guys are all around the same age. We've grown up playing against each other and I'm really excited to be playing with them now." Flint, who's been away from the in- door game for a couple of years due to his DU commitments, came up through the Halton Hills Minor Lacrosse system and had 31 goals and 60 points as a 15-year- old with the Jr. B Bulldogs, earning him a first-overall selection selection in the OLA Jr. A Draft by the Brampton Excelsiors. Also taken in the first round of Monday's NLL Draft was transi- tion player Ethan O'Connor of Milton, one of the key contribu- tors in the Jr. B Bulldogs' run to a Founders Cup championship in 2010. O'Connor was welcomed into the host Toronto Rock fold with the ninth pick overall after a rookie-of-the-year campaign in Major Series Lacrosse this sum- mer with Brampton alongside Acton native Sandy Chapman. "Guys like Sandy really taught me the nuances of the game at this level, how dif- ferent it is compared to Junior A (with the Burlington Chiefs)," he said. Georgetown resident JJ Laforet, who developed in the HHMLA with Flint as a teammate since the tyke level, was also drafted by Minnesota in round five Mon- day, 42nd overall. Laforet graduated from Stony Brook University on Long Island, N.Y. with a business/politics degree. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound defenceman was a Second Team All-America East se- lection in his senior year with the Sea- wolves. A graduate of The Hill Academy in Vaughan, Laforet, 23, spent three sea- sons with the Brampton Jr. A Excelsiors. A couple of former Bulldogs, forward Luke Laidlaw and goalie Mike Cregan, participated in the NLL's Combine over the weekend in Oakville but didn't hear their names called Monday evening. -- With files from Metroland West Media Group
