Halton Hills was ruled out a possible location. • Halton Board of Education trustees in- cluded $635,000 in the budget for the funding of computer in Halton schools. • A study on forming a United Way in Halton Hills was launched in May. • A powerful windstorm with winds clocked at more than 100 km/h blew trees across hydro lines creating black- outs, grass fires and a $10,000 blaze in Glen Williams. • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride was one of the main at- tractions at the Optimist Club's annual Bang-O-Rama, drawing an estimated 12,000 people to the Fairgrounds. • The Georgetown Fall Fair enjoyed good weather and large crowds with 11,000 to 12,000 attending. 1984...in the news • Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends came to town to shoot segments of his first movie, Follow That Bird. Children lined Main St. for two days as the movie crew, transformed Georgetown into Toadstool, Indiana. • Town council ended a 111-year-old tra- dition, approving a recommendation the fire chief appoint fire department line of- ficials rather than holding elections to fill the positions. • Brampton-Georgetown MP John Mc- Dermid and the rest of the country's Brian Mulroney Tories swept the polls. He re- ceived more than 20,000 votes than his closest competition, Liberal Ross Milne. • Work began on the 58-single family home development behind Georgetown Market Place. • Mackenzie Buildall was named Business of the Year by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce. The business had been a family affair since its beginning in 1900 (Acton) and 1909 (Georgetown). • Ralph Ursel was voted Citizen of the Year by the Georgetown Lions.
