The braids were to be donated to make a wig for a child undergoing cancer treatment. • Paavo (Paul) Henttonen, 54, was found stabbed to death in his Rosetta St. apartment in May. In November, Halton Police announced a $25,000 reward for information on the crime, that remains unsolved today. • In April it was reported that unless long-term unstainable funding could be found for Open Door and Off the Wall youth centres they were set to close in June. Trillium Foundation funding came through later in the year keeping the centres open for three years. • In April, the Ontario Municipal Board gave the green light to the construc- tion of 500 new homes on Main St. S. Georgetown lands that sparked contro- versy in the community. 2002...in the news • More than $3 million in government funding was announced in May for the Town's recreation centre to be built in Georgetown South. Construction was slat- ed to begin in the fall. • Joshua Close, 20, of Georgetown landed himself a role in the movie K-19 The Wid- owmaker with Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson it was reported in May. • In August, Doris Barber was frustrated with Canada Post because over the past seven years she had received several let- ters addressed to a couple who lived at the same address as hers, but in Gananoque. • Christ the King Catholic Secondary School opened on Guelph St. in September as the new home to 630 students. • Grade 5 St. Francis of Assisi students Richerd Kivioja and Robbie Murden were among four lucky kids who had a sneak preview of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets movies in November and were to review it on Canada A.M. • William Osler Hospital released a statement in August announcing birthing services were being temporarily redirected to Brampton Hospital due to a nursing shortage in the Georgetown Obstetrics Department. Full services were restored in October.
