Holding the enemy at bay with a C6 ma- chine gun while his sergeant was able to co-ordinate a withdrawal, McNeilly later re- ceived a Commander's Commendation for his actions. • More than 1,500 people turned out for the opening of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Georgetown South after 46 years at its previous location on Maple Ave. • Town council almost unanimously decides to approve the addition of three arenas in the municipality-- two more at the Mold- Masters SportsPlex and the twinning of the Acton Arena-- at a cost of $29.2 million. • The Foo Fighters, one of the most popular rock bands in the world, played an exclusive concert in front of about 100 people in a local garage belonging to local resident Nick Perry, who won a contest and got to play guitar with the group for a few songs. • Fred Helson donates $1 million to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation in memory of his late wife Marg. The largest-ever single donation made to the hospital was desig- nated to go to a soon-to-be-built CT scanner suite in the emergency department. 2011...in the news • Georgetown's Courtney Chard achieves Red Seal qualification, becoming the first female journeyman steamfitter, visual X-ray technician and pipeline welder in Canada. • Walmart Canada announces the take- over of the leases for 39 Zellers stores across Canada, including the Zellers Georgetown location at the Market Place mall. • Georgetown's Kim Speer receives the Prime Minister's Award from Stephen Harper at a ceremony in Ottawa for her educational efforts with Kindergarten stu- dents at an Oakville independent school. • A bronze plaque that disappeared in 1991, which listed the names of the 18 Second World War soldiers (also Abitibi Provincial Paper Mill employees) who had lost their lives while on active duty was discovered nearly 20 years later hidden behind other items at a maintenance ga- rage at Greenwood Cemetery. • The final act of the Tachmen Car Club before ceasing activities was to present a $50,000 cheque to the Georgetown Hos- pital Foundation. Arriving in Georgetown in 1966 after over 20 years in Brampton, club members shared their expertise and tools in automotive restoration.
