Although MS-B students have tradi- tionally participated in a number of Re- membrance Day ceremonies at school and at the Acton cenotaph, two parents contacted the school administration with letters expressing their disappointment that two minues of silence were not ob- served at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 (Monday). "For our children's sake and in our veterans' honour, the school should have realized the importance and signifi- cance of those two minutes of silence-- at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month-- and asked both staff and students to observe it, no matter what else was going on," said parent Shelagh Bailey, whose grandfather fought in the Second World War and passed away in 2010. MS-B principal Lisa Serebrin said that in past years, Remembrance Day ceremonies were observed on the school day before Nov. 11 so that members of the Acton Legion's Colour Guard were able to attend the MS-B event last Friday, in which several students participated in readings, poems and the placing of wreaths. As well, three MS-B students attended the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Saturday and placed a wreath at the Ac- ton cenotaph on behalf of the school. On Monday, several students also took part in the official ceremonies in Acton, and Serebrin noted that essays, art projects, poem writing and wreath making in hon- our of veterans have been incorporated into classroom activities. "Traditionally, we've conducted our ceremony on the day before the town's ceremony and that allows the Colour Guard to be here and we can observe Remembrance Day together as a whole group," Serebrin said. But the principal acknowledged on Tuesday that two minutes of silence should have been observed on Nov. 11, and if the school follows a similar format next year, an observation of the two min- utes of silence will take place at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month.
