Seventeen-year-old Dana Mitchell's 800-word submis- sion entitled In Facing the Sun was one of five prize winners to advance to the final round of judging out of dozens of en- tries from across North Amer- ica in the Teen category (age 13-19 yrs.) of the Alice Munro Short Story Writing Contest. Mitchell's story involves an elderly Holocaust survivor and a young male tattoo artist. "The woman has six num- bers on her arm (from a con- centration camp) and she asks him to make them beautiful, so he colours in between the numbers to make them look like sunflowers," Mitchell said. "I really like (Munro's) work, but I just entered the story by chance. I'd just finished writ- ing it and figured it was the right time and thought, why not?" Mitchell received her award and a $300 bursary while par- ticipating in the annual Alice Munro Writers & Readers Fes- tival held over a weekend re- cently in Wingham, Ont. Unfortunately, Munro wasn't able to attend her fes- tival due to illness, but sent a videotaped message that was played for the contest's top fin- ishers. As well, on the same day she entered the Munro con- test, Mitchell sent in the same short story for a Halton Hills Public Library competition for high school students and was named the overall winner.
