When Greg Barr of Barr's Small Engines Inc. went look- ing on the Internet for a service he could use, he found there wasn't a lot of information available locally. At the same time, he was fi nding it diffi cult to get the message of his own business out there to customers, and he was in need of a better way to advertise. "I was tired of using discount programs where you lose profi t for short-term customers that won't come back unless there are up front incentives," said Barr. "I fi gured there had to be a better way." After working on a concept, he eventually developed an on- line service that would cater to the local residents of Halton, putting the names of reputable businesses on the map. He launched HaltonExperts. ca, a referral website that is searchable and organized in various categories. "I wanted it to be a website that you could go to for local businesses, all within Halton," said Barr. "It's a direct referral site, and there are no discounts on it, just a place to fi nd some- one who does a service that you need." "I have a limit who can be on the website," said Barr. "I don't post franchises or big business- es on the site, only local inde- pendent businesses." The fee to be on the site is $450 a year, which gives the business a web page with up to 500 words to describe or pro- mote the business. In addition, the page can also be used to link to the business' website or Face- book. Barr will also post a map and a logo or photo for the busi- ness, to make it easier to fi nd. "There are no annoying pop- ups," said Barr, "only the in- formation you need to fi nd the service you're looking for. There are drop-down menus and the businesses are displayed in various categories. You can also search the categories by name or service as well." The service is comprised primarily of Georgetown area businesses, with some from Milton, but he has hopes of expanding to all of Halton. It's part of the 'shop local' plan, and Barr hopes HaltonExperts.ca can play a major part. To date, Barr has 25 busi- nesses online and is hoping to increase the list and categories. Local Nia teacher and library staff member Mary Baxter is one of the movers and shakers behind this event. "There's a lot that libraries and Nia have in common. For exam- ple they're both about commu- nity, expanding horizons and per- sonal development," says Baxter. A number of experienced Nia teachers provide classes in and around Halton Hills and many will be participating in the Nia Jam. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of bookshelves for the new library. Nia is a sensory-based move- ment practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing practices.
