ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR: Flu cases leveling off Town of Halton Hills council re- cently authorized the mayor to sign an agreement with the Catholic Cemeter- ies of the Diocese of Hamilton to share a portion of the new Holy Redeemer Cemetery for a public cemetery. Holy Redeemer Cemetery is the new 42-acre Catholic cemetery located on 17 Sideroad, just west of the Trafalgar Sports Park. The Town had intended to develop an 8-acre portion of the Sports Park for a public cemetery but instead, be- gan negotiations with the Diocese. The Town's portion will be about 10 acres on the eastern edge of the Cath- olic cemetery, delineated by gates, and named Devereaux Cemetery after the family who farmed the land. The pub- lic and Catholic cemetery-goers will share the driveway and main entrance. The public cemetery will be operated and maintained by the Catholic Dio- cese, which runs other similar shared cemeteries. Councillor Bob Inglis, a member of the Town's Cemeteries Committee, said the agreement comes at a good time because, "At this point the limit of Greenwood Cemetery is being real- ized." He noted that it's taken a decade of negotiations to reach this point. Warren Harris, Manager of Parks and Open Spaces, said the Town will now look at sport uses for the unused parcel in the Sports Park such as three to four more soccer fi elds, multi-use courts or a beach volleyball court. Harris will bring back to council an updated master plan for the Sports Park. Despite statistics released by Public Health Ontario showing fl u cases are on the rise in Halton, the Region's health department is reporting cases are leveling off, much like other communities across Ontario. Halton Medical Offi cer of Heatlth Dr. Bob Nosal said the numbers released by the Prov- ince don't necessarily refl ect what's happening in the com- munity. He said Halton reached its peak in fl u cases during late December and based on the health department's own lab- confi rmed cases and surveil- lance of hospitals and school, fl u cases are going down. Public Health Ontario reports show that in Halton from Dec. 9-15 there were 13 cases, followed by 28 cases from Dec. 16- 29, 37 cases from Dec. 30-Jan. 5 and most recently 50 cases reported from Jan. 6-12. But Nosal said the Region's numbers have been showing a decline in fl u cases. During Dec. 16-22 there were 24 lab- confi rmed cases, followed by 38 cases from Dec. 23-29, 35 cases from Dec. 30-Jan. 5, 28 cases from Jan. 6-12. Health offi cials continue to encourage residents get the fl u shot to protect themselves and those around them. A fact sheet developed by the Ministry of Health and Long- Term Care states that the fl u is a serious illness that can lead to pneumonia. It also states that an Ontario study showed that every year, the fl u shot eliminates the need for more than 200,000 visits to doctors' offi ces and 30,000 visits to hos- pital emergency departments. It also prevents approximately 300 deaths every year. According to Public Health Ontario, there have been a total of 5,571 cases so far this fl u season, including 1,247 hospi- talizations and 92 deaths. The majority of hospitalizations and deaths occurred in in- fl uenza A cases. The fl u strain H3N2 is still the predomi- nant circulating respiratory virus in Ontar- io currently.
