Local artists have been waiting for more than a year, when they could once again exhibit in 'their' gallery-- only to have it yanked away in the 11th hour. Imagine if the Town pulled a similar stunt with one of the new arenas. As they prepare to open it and suddenly the mayor announces the Toronto Marlies have exclu- sive use for practices? Locals could go and sit in the seats, but not use the ice. There'd be a war. Helson's gift is a wonderful addition, but it comes with a hefty price. Local artists will suffer-- and will ulti- mately exhibit elsewhere. And after the novelty time has passed, only the occasional tourist will visit the Helson Gallery. It won't be a 'magnet' like Bonnette says. The 'magnet' is called The McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg. Recently, council okayed $86,000 to hire a part-time curator and security upgrades for the Helson Gallery. When I heard that, another thought came to mind. In 10 years, we have essentially 'bought' the collection. And our artists still have no gallery.
