Photo by Ted Brown Halton Hills lands new doctor Mayor Rick Bonnette offi cially wel- comed Dr. Muhammad Fairoze Poonah to Halton Hills on Thursday, by providing fi - nancial assistance in starting his new fam- ily practice. The program provides a $5,000 grant and a $10,000 interest-free loan while the physician commits to establishing a family practice for a minimum of fi ve years in the community. Dr. Poonah, who was raised in Missis- sauga, has set up his offi ce at 83 Mill Street (Suite 202) in Georgetown and is currently accepting new patients. "I look forward to establishing my medi- cal career in Halton Hills; I have received a warm welcome since arriving," he said. "The quality of life we enjoy in Halton Hills is dependent on residents having ac- cess to health care in our community; fam- ily doctors play a key role in delivering these services and the program has been successful in attracting new doctors" said Bonnette. The Physician Recruitment Program has helped to attract four new family doctors to Halton Hills in the last four years. According to an update presented Wednesday to Halton Regional Council, 22 new family physicians established their practice in Halton in 2012. Overall, Halton Region's Physician Recruitment program has helped bring 182 new family doctors to Halton since 2003. Halton's physician retention rate is 74 per cent, representing 134 full-time per- manent physicians, taking into account re- tirements, relocations and physicians who took over family practices since 2003. In addition to the Physician Recruit- ment Program the Town has made a $2.6 million investment in the expansion of the Georgetown Hospital which adds to in- creased services for residents. Additionally, the program provides on- going support, together with the Town of Halton Hills, to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's funded Nurse Practitio- ner program at the Acton Medical Clinic.
