On Monday, April 8, Peter Check of Cambridge, Ont. was convicted in the Ontario Court of Justice of fail- ing to comply with three orders to pay his former employees. The amount of the orders totalled about $63,000. About $55,000 of that total has yet to be paid, according to a news release issued by the prov- ince. A 2009 Toronto Star investigation found Check, who is now 65, was op- erating pool supply companies and hired students to work as lifeguards. He changed the name of his business each summer. The investigation found Check would hire the lifeguards for the en- tire summer, then withhold the last month's wages. When his employees complained about their non-pay- ment, he would go out of business. Employment standards offi cers from the Ministry of Labour found that Check owed his workers between $80 and $3,100 in wages and issued three orders to pay between Decem- ber 2008 and May 2009. "Vulnerable workers, including those in seasonal businesses or young workers in summer jobs, are entitled to protection from those who might try to take advantage of them, said Yasir Naqvi, Minister of Labour. "Our government is committed to ensuring that all Ontarians receive fair treatment at work. It is impor- tant for workers to know that they have rights and that those rights are protected." Check will serve his jail time on weekends. His sentence was set to begin Friday. --By Torstar News Service Former Acton resident found guilty of cheating student lifeguards of pay
