She explained that the two people in her drawing were mommy and daddy, and the little angel fl oating above them was Meagan, there, always to be with them. It had been fi ve months since Mea- gan's diagno- sis of brain stem glioma, an inoperable and cancerous brain tumour. A few weeks later, Meagan celebrated her fi fth birthday and then, on Father's Day, quietly passed away. Meagan's dad, and Denise's husband is Kevin Bebenek who grew up in George- town. Meagan's story is one of courage, grace and hope. And it is her spirit that inspired Denise, with the help of a caring commu- nity, to found Meagan's Walk: Creating A Circle of Hope, a legacy for all children liv- ing with brain tumours, the leading cause of cancer-related death in young people, age 20 and under. Through Meagan's Walk (and other re- lated events), Denise has galvanized a com- munity and raised more than $2.7 million for SickKids which hosts the only facility in Canada dedicated to paediatric brain tu- mour research.
