Union Presbyterian Church is celebrating 180 years of service to the local community with a service on May 26, at 10:30 a.m. fea- turing special guest speaker, Rev. Bryan Fox and praise music lead by the Kerr Family Band. Union Presbyterian Church is located at 16789, 22 Sideroad, Georgetown, between Terra Cotta and Glen Williams. In 1833, pioneering farmers between Salmonville (now Terra Cotta) and Wil- liamsburgh (now Glen Williams) gathered to praise and celebrate the forming of the Presbyterian Church in their community. The fi rst church structure was built to house the growing congregation in 1835-- 40 years before the forming of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. The current magnifi cent stone Union Church has stood on the road between Glen Williams and Terra Cotta since 1884. In 1926 Union together with Norval wel- comed the Rev. Ewen Macdonald as their minister. Ewen's wife was the famous Cana- dian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. The couple lived in the manse (minister's house) beside the church building in Norval until Ewen's retirement in 1935. Union member Nora Winterfl ood (nee Lyons) part of the Union Congregation since 1928 and former organist, recalls spending time at the church with with Rev. MacDon- ald's two sons. Her fondest memories also include previous anniversary services. "The congregation would gather lilacs and ferns from the adjacent properties-- now part of Sheridan Nurseries-- the pulpit would be a mass of fragrant fl owers. There would be two services to ensure everyone was able to attend, and a guest soloist, often from the Toronto Conservatory would bring the music to life," she says. Nora particularly remembers soloist "The Golden Voice of the Air," Wishart Campbell and is happy that the Union will again be fi lled with music for this anniversary. Most people fi rst meet our congregation through our community fundraising. We have our 30th annual Pie and Shrub Sale featuring plants kindly donated by Sheridan Nurseries in June, and a Pork Barbecue in September. In the summer you can meet us at the Union corn booth on Mayfi eld Road. Money raised supports many local mission, outreach and development efforts. In 2012 Union was able to give close to $10,000 to local charities, including the Georgetown Bread Basket, Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills and Bethel House. This is in addition to our contribution to our support of the denomination's work through Pres- byterian World Service & Development and Presbyterian Sharing. Today our small but welcoming congre- gation has a service every Sunday, a bible study, a Women's Missionary Society and Sunday school. At 10:30 a.m. on Sunday May 26, we in- vite you to join as The Kerr Family Band will lead us in musical praise and Rev. Bryan Fox will be our special guest speaker. At noon, we will have a sandwich lunch following the service, and members of the congrega- tion will be on hand to share stories and to answer questions about the church. If you have always wanted to visit, now would be the perfect time! Union Presbyterian Church is engaged in ministries that extend to people outside of our church and even beyond our local com- munity as we share our resources with others who are in need.
