From construction to costumes, from the page to the stage, skilled Georgetown District High School staff and students from Grade 9 to 12 have been working dili- gently to polish and perfect The Children's Hour, by Lillian Hellman. Set in the 1930s, this drama takes place in an all-girls boarding school run by two women, Karen Wright and Martha Dobie. A malicious student, Mary Tilford, runs away from the school and to avoid being sent back she tells her grandmother that the two headmistresses are having a love affair. The accusation proceeds to destroy the women's lives. Director Samantha Jones-Potts says, "The idea of directing a full scale produc- tion was scary, but I had overwhelming support from the school and the communi- ty and without the team of people I'm work- ing with, it wouldn't be possible to tackle a project of this magnitude. Even though the play was written in 1934, the themes and characters are still relevant. I'm hoping this production resonates and will open up dia- logue about how we treat one another." "It's been an incredibly rewarding expe- rience," says senior student Grace Done, who plays the lead role Karen Wright. "Performing in The Children's Hour has taught me to commit, has provided me the opportunity to meet new people with simi- lar interests, and has allowed me to feel like I'm a part of something." Angela Ashley, a Grade 10 student who plays Mary Tilford says, she admires the cast and crew's "work ethic and profes- sionalism. It's amazing to work with people who care as much as I do." Show dates: Feb. 27, 7 p.m.; Feb. 28, 7 p.m.; March 1, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets: $12/adult and $8/student in advance or at the door. Info: www.georgetowndistric- thighschool.com or 905-877-6966.
