The hometown bluegrass band will have your toes tapping when they perform bluegrass pieces or accom- pany the choir as they sing beautiful ballads from Can- ada's East Coast. It is interesting to note that bluegrass music as it evolved in the U.S., and in Eastern Canada, has the same Celt- ic roots. A special fea- ture of the con- cert is The World Beloved - A Blue- grass Mass. This innovative composition com- bines the sacred, classical choral tradition with the down home sound of banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and bass. To quote com- poser Carol Bar- nett: "To bring the solemnity of the classi- cal choir-based mass together with the down home sparkle of bluegrass was a difficult assignment. My highest hope is that listen- ers coming from one tradi- tion - classical or bluegrass - and perhaps dubious about the other, might discover something new and wonder- ful in the combination, as I have." According to reviews of other performances of this work, "Barnett manages to honour both the classi- cal choral tradition and the improvisatory impulse of bluegrass music in her con- temporary rendition of the mass." Come and enjoy this excit- ing music on Saturday, May 3, 8 p.m., at the Christian Reformed Church, 11611 Trafalgar Road, George- town. Tickets are $20 ($25 at the door).
