Earth W eek Thursd ay, A P R 17, 2014 3 By chance, did a digital alarm clock wake you up this morning? Are you about to plug in your smartphone for a much needed charge? Did you turn on the lights, watched the morning news on the TV, or browsed the web on your tablet? Perhaps you drive an electric vehicle and will be unplugging it after a full charge before you head out on your commute. Once at work, you are sure to encounter many electronics, including computers and printers, not to mention all the lights. These are just a few examples of how important energy, whether in the form of electricity, natural gas or fuel, is to our daily routines. Without energy at our fin- gertips, our lives and communities would look much different. While energy can be a significant cost for households and businesses, it is also an opportunity to make some simple changes to reduce our energy use and re- alize savings. Earth Day is a great time to consider ways of doing this. Many Canadians have already taken steps to conserve energy. In 2011, Sta- tistics Canada notes that 82 per cent of households took at least one action to conserve energy. Common practices in- cluded washing laundry in cold water and turning off computer monitors. So, this Earth Day, what can you do to lower energy use, save money and help the environment? Here are just a few simple tips: • Explore energy conservation pro- grams offered by Halton Hills Hydro. • Take advantage of saveONenergy coupons for energy-efficient products. • Contact Union Gas for available in- centives. • Try running large appliances at off- peak times. • Clothes dryers consume a lot of en- ergy. Try using a clothesline instead. • Replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs. • Plug your TV, DVD, PVR, computer See SAVE, pg. 4 Energy is all around us ByDAMIAN SZYBALSKI Manager of Sustainability, Planning, Development and Sustainability De- partment, Town of Halton Hills
